- Bishop Snyder High School and Eagle ViewAcademy were focused on more than just winning a basketball game Tuesday night. The two high school teams wanted to help 2-year-old Lucy Sembach win her fight against cancer in what they called the "Light it up for Lucy" night. Lucy was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, but surgeons at Wolfson's Children Hospital were able to remove a majority of the tumor just days before Thanksgiving. "She's progressing, slowly but it's pretty amazing," Lucy's mother, Melanie Sembach, who is an audiologost at the Navy hospital, said. "Every day she keeps getting better and better." Lucy's parents have been by her side throughout the fight, but the hospital visits have hurt the family hard with deductibles topping $15,000. Times have been stressful with alternating nights at the hospital and at home with their two other children, 8-year-old Ben and 5-year-old Kate. "Its been stressful. With the holidays approaching and this happening right before Thanksgiving we spent Thanksgiving in the hospital," Lucy's father and Jacksonville Sheriff's officer Casey Sembach said. "A lot of stress but again, theres been a lot of support, so weve been able to kind of look past that and just accept everybodys graciousness and be able to use that and move forward with Lucys rehab and her just getting better, overall." A family friend has already raised $18,000 through a GoFundMe page , but wanted to get the community involved in helping Lucy win the fight against cancer. "Overwhelmed. It's, you know, grateful for everybody in the community that's coming out and supporting Lucy and kind of taking up her cause," Casey said.
